William L. Heward Behaviour Change for a Sustainable World Award
The William L. Heward Award was created by the Atlantic Provinces Association for Behaviour Analysis in order to increase awareness of the use of behavioural principles to promote change in human behaviours that have an impact on environmental challenges. The award will be given to a project or a study that applies concepts and principles of behaviour analysis to promote sustainable practices/environmentally friendly behaviour change. Any applied, basic or translational study with a primary goal of increasing understanding of human behaviour and environmental preservation/enhancement is eligible for consideration.
We would like to take this opportunity to share with students in the Atlantic region the many ways in which they can use behavioural principles in order to create lasting change in practices which will support more responsible use of resources or practices that increase environmentally friendly behaviours.
Behavior analysis is a science focused on the principles of learning. Positive reinforcement is one such principle. When a behaviour is followed by some sort of desirable event, the behaviour is more likely to continue in the future. Through decades of research, the field of behaviour analysis has developed many techniques for increasing useful behaviours and reducing those that may cause harm or interfere with learning. Behaviour analysis is the use of these techniques and principles to bring about meaningful and positive change in behaviour. With this award, we’d like to see how you can use these principles to effect change in your community.
Please see below for some examples of the use of applied behaviour analysis in changing human behaviour. You’ll find many ways that could be used in your own schools or communities, as well as inspiring new ideas of your own.
