Event Details:
Broccoli Bootcamp is a handbook for parents to address the complicated family dynamics at mealtimes when a child refuses to consume what is served. This handbook provides parents with background information on food selectivity, highlighting the impact of nutrition on behaviour and development. Broccoli Bootcamp goes on to describe the relationship between sensory differences, food selectivity, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as research findings about other factors that may lead to selective eating in children. Broccoli Bootcamp offers parents information on 5 different plans for approaching their child’s food selectivity, but first describes the evidentiary foundations of these approaches, including a chapter on antecedent manipulations, and another on consequent strategies. The authors provide questions that probe the reader to consider the environmental and child specific factors before selecting one of the interventions, and finally, they offer measurement strategies to determine the effectiveness of their implementation of the plan on the child’s food consumption.
In this course, we will cover each of the topics covered in Broccoli Bootcamp, and discuss the handbook in the broader sense, such as its format as a handbook for parents, the option for readers to select their preferred approach from the 5 interventions presented, and why the authors chose to take this route with their work. We will break down the evidence basis discussed in this handbook, the description of antecedent and consequent manipulations presented to readers, and how these components work together to form the 5 options for family mealtime interventions.

-Explain the importance of parent education and the value of parent-mediation in food selectivity interventions
-List the intervention options delineated in the Broccoli Bootcamp Handbook for parents to choose from and the evidence-basis behind each one (including foundational antecedent and consequent practices)
-Illustrate the key features of multi-tiered systems of support utilized by Dr. Williams in Broccoli Bootcamp
-Expound on the Evidence-Based, Behavioural Foundations in each intervention
-Apply knowledge to case examples and make recommendations for modifications or specific/additional strategies to be used in addition to the protocol.
